Azerbaijan takes measures to prevent import of chains for self-torture: Committee chairman

Azerbaijan, Baku, Dec. 17 / Trend K. Zarbaliyeva /

The measures have been taken to prevent import of chains for self-torture due to the month of Maharram in Azerbaijan under assistance of the State Customs Committee, the State Committee for Work with Religious Organizations chairman Hidayat Orujev told media today.

"Chains are smuggled into Azerbaijan. I would like the society to react to it unambiguously. The state organizations will control religious rites", Orujev said.

The Caucasus Muslim Board (CMB) issued a fatwa in connection with the beginning ofMuharram month. December 18 was announced as the beginning of Muharram month. Ashura Day will be on Dec. 27.

Maharram Month is the first month of the Islamic religion according to Hegira calendar. Imam Hussein and his relatives were killed by troops of Yezid ibn Muaviyya on the day of Ashura.

Orujev said that Maharram month must be celebrated as a call to restore justice.

"Self-tortures will not be allowed. Such ceremonies are contrary to Islamic culture and traditions. Azerbaijan has a good experience to hold donor campaigns," the committee chairman said.

He said that attempts are made in Azerbaijan to introduce rites alien to the national and religious traditions.

"Self-tortures using chains were registered in mosques last year. The investigation revealed that these actions were organized by the same people at various time," Orujev said.
