Azerbaijan, Baku, Dec.22 / Trend , A.Huseynbala /

Media outlets should pay successive and systematic attention to regional developments, Azerbaijani Press Council Chairman Aflatun Amashov said in a conference held in Yevlakh on the topic "State of regional media outlets in globalization and convergence: Reality and modern tendencies".

About 4,000 media outlets registered in Azerbaijan. At present, only 600 of them operate. About 400 newspapers and magazines are published. Eight republican TV channels, 14 regional TV and 13 cable televisions channels operate. There are approximately 50 electron media outlets, about 20 news agencies and internet resources in Azerbaijan.

According to Amashov, coverage of regional life with its positive and negative milestones in the country's leading media outlets is an important factor of this region's social and political life.

"The official public newspapers play a great role in coverage of regional life by our leading media outlets," Deputy Chief Editor of Xalg gazeti newspaper Tahir Aydinoglu said in the conference.

Aydinoglu said independent publications mainly give preference to materials of criminal character.

Next meeting under the conference was dedicated to relations of regional media outlets with judicial and law enforcement agencies.

According to Chief of Program Department of International Eurasian Press Fund Nick Nwolisa, at present, the main problem which journalists face from a legal point of view is that they are made answerable for libel and insult. "Another problem which media outlets face is related with access to information. A journalist is not on the scene every time and has to appeal to newsmakers. However, it is very important for them to be interested in sharing information," Nwolisa said.
