Several men accused of drug trafficking from Iran to Azerbaijan are now on trial in Baku.
The prosecutor opened the trial against Murad Aliyev, Azer Mammadov and Iranian citizen Alibala Tarverdiyan at the Baku Heinous Crimes Court Jan. 12.
The prosecutor demanded 13 years in prison for Tarverdiyan, 12 years in prison for Aliyev and 11 years in prison for Mammadov.
The court will read out the verdict Jan. 15.
The men were detained by the Azerbaijani National Security Department while attempting to transport drugs from Iran to Azerbaijan in large quantites in May 2009.
They are charged with Article 206.2.3 (smuggling), 228 (illegal purchase, transfer, selling, storage, transportation and carrying of fire-arms, accessories to it, supplies, explosives), 234.4.1, 234.4.3 (Illegal purchase or storage without a purpose of selling of narcotics or psychotropic substances in a amount) of the Azerbaijani Criminal Case.
