Thalassemia Centre: Level of morbidity in thalassemia increases in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijani Thalassemia Centre Head Azer Karimov said the number of thalassemia patients has reached 1,000 people in the country.

Azerbaijani Thalassemia Centre Head Azer Karimov said the number of thalassemia patients has reached 1,000 people in the country.

"The center registered about 600 such patients," he said at the parliamentary meeting on the family and marriage issues.

Karimov said if preventive measures are not carried out in the coming years, the number of thalassemia patients may reach 45,000.

Azerbaijan still records blood marriages, Karimov said.

"The country spends 10,000 manat to treatment of children born in such marriages. However, thalassemia is incurable. The Centre takes preventive measures for the prevention of such fats," Karimov added.
