Azerbaijan is one of the Muslim countries openness to the world, President of the Pontifical Council for Culture Archbishop Gianfranco Ravasi said at the meeting with Azerbaijani State Committee for Work with Religious Organizations Chairman Hidayat Orujov in Baku, the committee reported.

"Azerbaijan is one of the open-Muslim countries around the world. We appreciate the traditional tolerance of this country and would like to familiarize the country with the Catholic world. Respect and concern with regard to religion and tolerance for people of all faiths in Azerbaijan can become a model for other countries," Ravasi said.

The freedom of religion, respect for the faith of people and the state care is reflected in the Azerbaijani Constitution and the law "On freedom of religion," Orujov said.

"The country equally treats all religions and people believing in these religions. As a historical stronghold of the ethnic and religious tolerance, Azerbaijan has never been a hotbed of ethnic and religious discrimination. There was never a conflict on this basis. A great role belongs to National Leader Heydar Aliyev in the preservation of this tradition. Today, President Ilham Aliyev successfully continues this policy, "Orujov said.
