Ignorance leads to religious radicalism in Azerbaijan, State Committee for Work with Religious Organizations Chairman Hidayat Orujov said.
"It's no secret that Azerbaijan needs to provide religious education to our citizens," he said in an interview with the ruling New Azerbaijan Party. "Some citizens are influenced by radical religious groups, non-traditional religions and sects due to ignorance."
A result, for example, is the recent upswing in early marriages in the country, he said.
"Unfortunately, many people associate say these marriages are religious," Orujov added. "But this is a superficial approach. Girls get married before finishing elementary schools upon their parents' initiative. Experience shows that such families fall apart relatively quickly. Religious leaders must seriously consider these kinds of issues and express their feelings on the matter."
