The material and technical base of the media have strengthened over the recent years, the Head of the Presidential Administration of Azerbaijan, Academician Ramiz Mehdiyev said at the celebration of the 135th anniversary of the national press of Azerbaijan.
"Over recent years, activities have been greatly expanded to strengthen the material-technical base of media and evaluate the work of journalists," he said.
Upon to the order by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, signed on February 8, 2006, the debts of newspapers to Azerbaijan Printing House in amount of 400,000 manat were paid from the Public budget, he said.
"Since 2005, about 300 media staff have been awarded state awards and honorary titles. In 2005, thirty newspapers received 2,000 manat per each. In 2008, 5,000 manat was allocated to 38 media outlets per each, and in 2009, thirty-nine newspapers received 10,000 manat in aid from the state per each," said Mehdiyev.
According to Mehdiyev, signed by President Ilham Aliyev on June 31, 2008, the order is an important document, envisaging complex measures for state support of mass media to ensure freedom of expression and information.
As a result of a deliberate policy to ensure freedom of expression and information, today Azerbaijan takes one of the leading positions among the CIS countries and the East for the number of media outlets," he said.
According to Mehdiyev, there are more than 4,200 media outlets registered with the Ministry of Justice, more than fifty news agencies registered, 36 daily, 100 weekly and 80 monthly newspapers are published in the Republic.
"In Azerbaijan, the freedom of opinion, expression and information is an essential part of the policy of President Ilham Aliyev and democratic achievements. Azerbaijani government will be continuing fulfilling the obligations in the sphere of democracy," said Mehdiyev.
