Press council chairman: Rehabilitation of media outlets named in 'black list' is fundamentally important

Azerbaijan, Baku, August 3 /Trend, T.Hajiyev/

Bringing to the normal media environment and rehabilitation of media outlets, which have been named in the "black list" is fundamentally important for us, the chairman of the Press Council of Azerbaijan Aflatun Amashov said in his interview released by the Council.

"This list is a tool for public condemnation of the press, which ignore the professional principles, publish materials, affecting the honor and dignity of people, slander, and commit other such illegal actions. It envisages not legal, but public responsibility, and publishing the "black list" aims to form society's reaction to the media of bad tendency," said Amashov.

According to chairman of the Press Council, "black list" is also useful for those who establish such press organs.

"The Press Council announces "racketeer" the media outlets, which are unsatisfactorily accepted by the society and whose actions are subject to investigation by administrative order. If this step would not be taken, the vast majority of the representatives of such media outlets would either be in jail, or had to pay court fines. The other side of this issue is that despite that the actions of such media outlets should be evaluated on the legal plane, due to the regulatory role of the Council, these people face only public condemnation," said Amashov.

According to him, serious reforms are necessary for admission to the faculties of journalism.

"Experience shows that most students at these faculties got there not by choice. We consider it important to admit through the exams on ability. We are confident that the issue would soon be resolved. Education of reporters abroad is also important. The question of annually sending Azerbaijani journalists abroad to study at schools of journalism is crucial," said Amashov.
