Azerbaijan conducted tree-planting and seeding activities over a 1,371-hectare area in the first half of this year. The statistic was announced yesterday at the Ecology and Natural Resources Ministry's collegiate meeting on the first six months of 2010, spokesman Irada Ibrahimova said.

The ministry held in-service activities over 14,459 acres and irrigation activities over 11,970 hectares, and harvested 10,099 kilograms of seeds and shrubs to expand forest territories.

The ministry also discussed environmental protection, forest development and efforts to protect biological diversity, as well as future challenges facing the ministry later this year.

The ministry is also working to establish state reserves along low mountains in the basin of the Sumgaitchay River and Gobustan. Activities are also underway to establish the Samur-Yalama National Park with the support of the German Economic Cooperation and Development Ministry as part of the "Caucasian Initiative" project.

Meetings on environmental issues are held under the chairmanship of President Ilham Aliyev. Special attention is paid to state programs aiming to provide sustainable solutions to environmental problems and activities implemented this year as part of the Year of Ecology.
