The amount of banned religious literature imported into Azerbaijan has decreased, the chairman of the State Committee for Work with Religious Organizations, Hidayat Orujov, said today at a press conference at the ruling New Azerbaijan Party's headquarters.

"Last year, 2,391 items of religious literature were considered for import, 385 of which were considered adverse and returned. As of Aug.1 this year, 993 items of religious literature were considered. Of these, 125 titles were returned," he said.

He said attempts to import adverse literature into the country are made to sow sectarian strife in Azerbaijan, which serves to the interests of the forces acting to politicize religion in the country.
