London hosted an event to mark the 125th anniversary of the birth of the Azerbaijani composer and musical giant Uzeyir Hajibeyov at the culture and friendship center of the Azerbaijani House in London on Oct.16, the Azerbaijani embassy in the UK reported.
Representatives of the public of London, Azerbaijani community of Great Britain and the embassy staff attended the event. Chairman of the Board of the Azerbaijani House in London Ali Tekin Atalar opened the event with welcoming speech. He spoke about the life and works of the great composer, and his outstanding achievements in the development of Azerbaijani music of the 20th century.
In his speech, Ambassador Fakhraddin Gurbanov noted that Hajibeyov laid the foundation of Azerbaijani classical music. Gurbanov spoke about activities of Hajibeyov as a worthy representative of the intelligentsia. He stressed that Hajibeyov is the most prominent representative of Azerbaijan's intellectuals. Most innovations in the art of classical music of the Muslim East are mainly linked with his name, Gurbanov said.
The event demonstrated videos devoted to the life and work of Uzeyir Hajibeyov. Then, young singers Nazrin Rashidova and Ayan Salakhova, living in Britain performed, "Esger's aria" from the "Arshin mal alan" musical of Hajibeyov and works of Gara Garayev. Mohammad Ansari and Farhad Amiri performed a number of musical works.
