The number of counselors at any given school will depend on the number of pupils, Azerbaijani Deputy Education Minister Irada Huseynova told Trend.

Earlier, one counselor worked at each school regardless of the number of pupils.

"The ministry is actively working to attract counselors to work at schools," Huseynova said.

There are 170,000 teachers and more than 1.42 million pupils at 4,552 public schools in Azerbaijan. About 1,005 teachers work at 17 private schools.

"We understand that the work of counselors at schools is important," she said.

About 226 people were recruited in Azerbaijan this year to work as counselors. Last year, the ministry conducted a tender to fill 365 vacancies at secondary schools for the 2009-2010 academic year.
