Azerbaijani Ombudsman appealed to the Prosecutor General and Interior Minister with a request to verify information on a young man's death in Baku as a result of beating by police.

Ombudsman Elmira Suleymanova, in her address, was asked to inform about the results of a full and comprehensive investigation of this issue, bringing perpetrators to justice and punishing them under the law.

According to media reports, Elvin Asgarov died from numerous injuries as a result of beating by the Nizami District Police Department's policemen.

It is reported that a group of young people leaving a restaurant were abused by members of the rapid response unit after refusing to proceed to the police station on Jan. 15.

According to the information, in response to law enforcement officers' insults, Elvin Asgarov wounded a police officer with a knife. According to some media reports, the young people were beaten by police on the way to the police department. As a result, Anar Ganiev received a hand injury, while Asgarov, with severe injuries, was taken to the City Clinical Hospital N. 3. Despite doctors' efforts, the young man died.

A criminal case has been filed under Article 315.2 (use of violence dangerous to life or health, in connection with performance of official duties by him or application of the violence not dangerous to life or health concerning his close relatives, as well as threat of application of such violence) of the Criminal Code.
