Azerbaijan to adopt new law on names

Azerbaijan, Baku, Jan.21 / Trend, M.Aliyev /

Azerbaijan will adopt a law on names, the Parliamentary Culture Committee Chairman Nizami Jafarov told Trend today.

He said the Institute of Information Technologies of the Azerbaijani National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) has conducted a fairly extensive work on the study of names and prepared a mechanism of naming  - "traffic light".

Based on the new "traffic light" principle, names corresponding to national, cultural and ideological values will be included in the "green list" and there will be no restrictions on their use. Names that are objectionable, not recommended, or have a negative meaning in foreign languages will be included in the "yellow list." Names of individuals who have committed aggression against the Azerbaijani people, or are insulting in Azerbaijani, will be included in the "red list" and will not be allowed. These names include the names of persons who have committed aggression against the Azerbaijani people, names, whose meaning is insulting in our language.

Jafarov believes that one cannot allow naming a child with distorted version of the existing names.

Previously it was supposed that the introduction of the new mechanism for the assignment of Azerbaijani names will be possible thanks to changes and amendments to the existing legislation.

"It is difficult to solve this issue by an order or amendments to existing law. Therefore, it is necessary to adopt a new law," Jafarov said.

Foreign countries' experience will be considered when preparing the law, he said.

At present, the list of names is under registration in the Ministry of Justice of the Republic.
