Agreement signed to hold world boxing championship in Azerbaijan

Boxing Federation of Azerbaijan (BFA) and the International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) on Monday signed an agreement to hold the 16th world boxing championship in Baku. The agreement was signed AIBA President Ching-Kuo Wu and BFA President Kamaladdin Heydarov.

Boxing Federation of Azerbaijan (BFA) and the International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) on Monday signed an agreement to hold the 16th world boxing championship in Baku. The agreement was signed AIBA President Ching-Kuo Wu and BFA President Kamaladdin Heydarov.  

"Over recent years, Azerbaijan has hosted a number of major international tournaments, and we are confident that the world boxing championship will be organized at a high level as well," Heydarov said at the signing ceremony.

The tournament in Baku will be particularly important in terms of getting licenses for the summer Olympic Games in London in 2012, said the AIBA President Ching-Kuo Wu at the ceremony. According to him, the world championship in Baku will be attended by the boxers from more than 100 countries. "AIBA will further continue the successful cooperation with the BFA and organize international tournaments in Azerbaijan," said Ching-Kuo Wu.

The world championship will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan, from Sept. 22 to Oct. 10, 2011. World boxing championship has been held since 1974. In the CIS countries, such tournament was held only in Moscow in 1989.
