Powers of Azerbaijani Council for Press may be expanded

Azerbaijan, Baku, April 25 /Trend, T. Hajiyev/

Proposals were made to expand the powers of the Azerbaijani Council for Press (CP), Vugar Rahimzadeh, a member of the CP Board and the chairman of the Commission on Combating Racket Journalism, told Trend on Monday.

Proposals include giving the CP the power to suspend newspapers, he said.

These proposals would contribute to optimizing the CP's fight against racket journalism, Rahimzadeh said.

"Sometimes, these newspapers continue their dirty activity in contrary to the CP decision. At a meeting of its Board last week, the CP took the decision to put two newspapers on the "black list".

They had been on the black list but were released from it after they corrected their activity. Now these newspapers again practice moments incompatible with the journalistic ethics and do not take warnings against them into account. Therefore, it was decided to appeal against the two newspapers to law enforcement agencies," said Rahimzadeh.

As a result of the Council for Press's activity, the community now blames racket journalism. In this work, the CP receives backing from the healthy press.
