Azerbaijan imposes restrictions on naming

Azerbaijan, Baku, May 17 / Trend, M. Aliyev /

The Azerbaijani government approved naming rules today, the Cabinet of Ministers reported.

The rules define the order of naming and changing names, surnames and patronymics for Azerbaijani citizens, stateless persons born and residents in Azerbaijan.

Under the rules, one cannot assign names that may harm a child's interests, which do not correspond with his sex or are funny.

In accordance with the Azerbaijani Family Code, a child is named by his parents.

The rules say persons having reached 18 years of age may change their surname, while persons under 18 need their parents' consent.
