The XIII World Congress of Russian Press (WCRP) started in Kiev, Ukraine. The President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych addressed the Congress, who spoke about the ongoing reforms and modernization of the country.

According to Yanukovych, last year, reforms were carried out in seven directions, and this year will be carried out in 14 directions.

"Ukraine has created good conditions for the development of a democratic society, in particular recently adopted law on access to public information," said the President.

Also the greeting of the UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova was read at the Congress by Russia's permanent representative to UNESCO Eleonora Mitrofanova. In her greeting, Bokova stated that the activities of WCRP are an important contribution to the development of the Russian language.

According to Bokova, WCRP has become an influential international organization. Bokova appreciated the activities of the WCRP President Vitaly Ignatenko, and expressed confidence that this organization has much to do.

Russian Presidential Administration Chief Sergei Narishkin also addressed the event. He mentioned the great merits of WCRP in the development of the Russian language. "The Russian language remains the language of international communication," Narishkin said.

Narishkin said the capital of Ukraine second time hosts the forum, bringing together representatives of the Russian-language media from many countries worldwide.
"The forum has been and remains a good platform for exchanging experiences and new ideas, discuss future joint projects," he said.

Narishkin stressed that Ukraine is one of the leaders for the number of books published in Russian and the number of Russian-language media outlets in the CIS. It is estimated that the total circulation of newspapers and magazines in Russian is 32 million copies. Large circulation of Russian-language media, publishing and teaching in Russian expand opportunities of the Ukrainian society, especially youth, help get orientated the information space of Russia and CIS countries.

Narishkin read the welcoming telegram by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. "Congress takes place in the year of the 70th anniversary of the Great Patriotic War and in this respect it is very important to make a decision to establish a data bank on these events," Medvedev said in his welcoming letter. Later Narishkin presented awards to a number of Russian-language media outlets on behalf of the Government of the Russian Federation. Tomorrow, Congress will continue its work in Odessa.

The next meeting of WCRP will be held in Italy, particularly in Rome, Naples and Capri, located on the island of the same name.
