The U.S. Defense Threat Reduction Agency opened two high-tech laboratories, monitoring animal diseases in Imishli and Sabirabad regions of Azerbaijan.

The chief of the State Veterinary Service under the Azerbaijani Ministry of Agriculture Siyala Rustamova attended the opening ceremony of both laboratories. She said that over $2 million were spent for the construction of laboratories.

She said that the project was funded by the U.S. government through a program of biological cooperation.

She said that about 10-15 people will work in the laboratories equipped with modern diagnostic equipment.

The laboratories will play a significant role in revealing high-risk diseases and preventing epidemics, she said.

The executive director of the U.S. Defense Threat Reduction Agency Ronnie Faircloth said that commissioning the laboratories will make it possible to combat dangerous viruses in Azerbaijan.

He said that the activity of the laboratory will benefit not only Azerbaijan but throughout the region.

The construction of laboratories was launched in April 2009.

The similar laboratories are planned to be built and commissioned in Barda, Gakh, Guba and Goygol regions soon. Each laboratory will cover five regions.
