The International Youth Congress and Great Silk Road Festival has today opened in Baku.

Over 200 representatives from 27 countries, representing state agencies working with young people, leaders and senior representatives of youth organizations, as well as young MPs attend the Congress.

The Congress was opened by Chairman of the Azerbaijani Youth Fund Farhad Hajiyev.

Azerbaijan, in particular, Baku is the center uniting East and West, Islamic and Christian religions, Youth and Sports Minister Azad Rahimov said at the opening of the Congress.

"So, Azerbaijan must play a role in uniting young people of the countries located on the Great Silk Road," he said. "We want to unite young people around a new platform, a new model."

The main goal of the Congress is to create conditions for cooperation of young people of the countries, located on the Great Silk Road, and organizations operating in the youth field, establishing closer links with representatives of different continents, religions, speaking
different languages​​, having different cultures, contributing to the creation and development of intercultural dialogue, youth, he said.

While speaking at the Congress, Azerbaijani Presidential Administration Political Analysis and Information Provision Department head Elnur Aslanov stressed that today the Azerbaijani youth plays an important role in public life and economy.

"Youth has become a leading force in our society," Aslanov said.
"Using the youth potential is one of the important issues of the society. As the state is developing, the youth becomes a subject of the most modern requirements."

"Today, Azerbaijan has turned from the post-Soviet into a modern country, achieved significant success in the economic sphere, particularly in the energy sector," he said. "Poverty in Azerbaijan dropped from 50 percent to a single digit figure. Azerbaijan is the
most strategically important country on the Great Silk Road. Without Azerbaijan's participation, no project can be implemented in the region."

Then the representatives from Hungary, Kazakhstan, Greece, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and other countries delivered speech.

The congress, which will work until June 30, will continue discussions on "Youth policy: experience and opportunities for cooperation," "inter-civilizational and intercultural dialogue as a means of achieving tolerance and mutual understanding among young people."

The International Youth Congress is expected to be established. Baku Declaration is expected to be adopted following the congress.

The exhibition of works by young photographers and artists, a gala concert with the participation of creative young people from different countries will be held.
