The Syrian government has launched the 'Great Damascus' project, the Al Jazeera TV channel reported today.

According to the TV channel, houses are being demolished in some parts of Damascus as part of this project's implementation.

The Syrian opposition believes the authorities are doing this to hide the damage caused to residents during heavy artillery shelling. However the officials say that the project implementation started long ago and the Ministry of Housing actively operates in this connection.
Anti-government protests have continued in Syria for a year and half.

According to UN, the total number of victims of the conflict in Syria is nearing 20,000.
More than 230,000 have become refugees with around three million in need of humanitarian assistance. The Syrian authorities say they oppose the well-armed militants.
