The members of a criminal group suspected of having connections with the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and planning attacks in Baku during Eurovision 2012 have been sentenced, the Baku Court of Grave Crimes reported on Monday.
The verdict was read against Kamal Yagubov, Rashad Shahbazov, Rajab Abbasov and Afig Allahverdiyev.
Yagubov was sentenced to 14 years in prison, Shahbazov to 13.5 years, and Abbasov and Allahverdiyev to 12 years.
Azerbaijani National Security Ministry detained an armed criminal group of 40 people after carrying out special operations in Baku, Sumgayit, Ganja, and in the Gakh, Zagatala, Sheki and Guba regions. The detainees were planning subversive terrorist acts to coincide with Eurovision-2012 in Baku.
They are charged under provisions of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijani Republic for treason, attempted terrorism, smuggling, illegal purchase of firearms, ammunition, explosives and their storage, transfer and intent to sell to others.
