Armenia currently is holding negotiations on the construction of a third energy block, Director of the Institute of Radiation Problems of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences Adil Garibov told Trend today.
According to him, Russia is preparing to allocate credit for the construction of a new reactor with a capacity of 1060 Megawatts at "Metsamor" Nuclear Power Plant. Currently, design works on this issue are being conducted. Construction of the reactor will be launched as soon as the credit is allocated. The third block will be located in Metsamor city.
According to Garibov, the third block is considered to be more secure and work there is planned to be realized with an absolutely new principle.
The institute director noted that, there is a water problem in Armenia in regards to the creation of energy blocks. According to him, water in the Araz River is not sufficient for the cooling system. International conventions also do not allow taking the required amount of water from this river for the block's activity. "They have water reserves for the second block with a 1060 Megawatt capacity. Nevertheless, currently, the source for the water cooling system is being determined.
Garibov maintains that Armenia will never stop the activity of "Metsamor" NPP. As NPP is a strategic image for this country. Armenia's main goal is to become a nuclear state: "Armenia always presents itself as a collapsed and poor nation. It says that this poor nation also needs nuclear objects for its struggle. It gets support from other states for this purpose. I suppose that, it is in a bad position. This aggression can create an uncontrolled situation and great problem for the world. Pay attention to how the world is concerned about Iran and North Korea. It is unknown what will happen if Armenia follows suit."
According to the expert, Armenia will launch the production of nuclear materials very soon. This will cause great problems. Its strength and position in that period will be different. Thus, from this view-point, neighboring countries, in particular Azerbaijan, which lives in a state of war, should always take this into account and shouldn't weaken strategic works.
