Some 256 cases of cholera infection were revealed in Iran in the current year (the year in Iran changes on March 21), deputy head of the Iranian Health Ministry's Communicable Diseases Centre, Mahmoud Nabavi said, IRNA reported on Jan. 28.

He said all the necessary measures have been taken in this regard and the general condition of patients is satisfactory.

He said that 83 percent of people infected with cholera are citizens of the neighbouring countries and illegal migrants.

"Over 74 percent of people infected with this disease live in villages. Some 91 percent of the infected are men," he said.

The cases of cholera infection have been identified in Iran for about 45 years, according to Iranian media outlets.

As of September 2013, the number of people infected with cholera was 170.
