EOC happy with facilities in Baku for upcoming European Games (PHOTO) (UPDATE)

The European Olympic Committees (EOC) is very happy with all facilities in Baku, which will host competitions as part of the First European Games, the EOC President Patrick Hickey said at a press-conference held in Baku Feb. 6.

"We are very happy with all the facilities that we have seen, and I know it well, because I have been here regularly," Hickey said. "But for my colleagues who have not been here in two-three months - they were quite astounded."

He also thanked Azerbaijan and the organizing committee for the welcome and reception in Baku.

Hickey said he is particularly grateful to Azerbaijan's First Lady, Chairperson of the Baku 2015 European Games Organizing Committee Mehriban Aliyeva for the deep interest in on all of the activities.

He also thanked the first lady for the design of the volunteers' uniforms adding that she had a great personal input into it.

Hickey also thanked Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev, saying "He has had great interest in these games."

"I would also want to thank my friend and colleague, Minister Azad Rahimov. Over the last years we have become like brothers, because we have been working so closely together to prepare these games," he further said.

Baku 2015 is the first ever European Games, an exciting and innovative multi-sport event for the continent which will take place from 12 - 28 June 2015.

There will be a total of 20 sports at Baku 2015: 16 Olympic sports and four non-Olympic sports. More than 6,000 athletes from across Europe will be representing their nations over 17 days of competition.

Eleven of the sports will offer qualification opportunities for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Those sports include Archery, Athletics, Boxing, Cycling, Shooting, Swimming, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Triathlon, Volleyball and Wrestling.

Baku was awarded the Games by the European Olympic Committees (EOC) in December 2012. The Baku European Games Operations Committee (BEGOC) will organise and run the Games in cooperation with the EOC.
