Three state universities of Latvia offer free education for young people from Azerbaijan as part of the previously signed agreements between the two countries, the senior expert of Latvia's Education and Science Ministry, Mara Katvare told Trend on Feb. 11.

She said the Azerbaijani students can apply to study at the University of Latvia, Riga Technical University, Latvia University of Agriculture for a number of specialties.

Currently, over 120 students from Azerbaijan study in Latvia.

"The accommodation and travel expenses of the students will also be paid," said Katvare. "The Azerbaijani youth are already using this offer, however, the higher education institutions of Latvia are ready to admit more students."

Katvare added that Latvia regularly takes part in educational programs in Baku, and many students from Azerbaijan study at private universities in Latvia.

The ministry's representative also said the number of the Latvian students studying in Azerbaijan is yet small. She expressed hope that the situation will soon change.

Earlier, in an interview with Trend, Latvia's Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics highlighted the importance of expanding cooperation with Azerbaijan in education and attracting more Azerbaijani students to Latvia's universities.
