Armenia – source of threat for Araz River, says Iranian MP

Tehran, Iran, July 4
By Temkin Jafarov - Trend:

Dumping of wastes of Armenia's Metsamor nuclear power plant and aluminum plant into Araz River causes threat for this river and the people living in the surrounding areas, Iranian MP Kamaladdin Pirmoazen told Trend July 4.

Each year, dumping of waste by Armenia into Araz River leads to cancer of thousands of people living in the Mugan region of Ardabil province, their death and other problems.

The MP urged Iranian government to start talks with Armenia on resolving this issue in a shortest possible time.

"Such actions by the neighboring country causes concern for our people, which is inadmissible," he said. "Iran and Armenia should find an acceptable way to save the Araz River and protect the environment."

Pirmoazen added that this issue also causes problems for the population and environment of Azerbaijan. He proposed to create a joint commission with participation of the countries through which the Araz River flows (Azerbaijan, Iran and Armenia) and resolve this problem within this commission.

Azerbaijan has faced the threat caused by the nuclear waste throughout many years.

There are irrefutable facts about the disposal of nuclear waste on Azerbaijan's occupied territories and dumping of Metsamor plant's wastes into the Caspian Sea through the Araz River by Armenia.

Metsamor nuclear power plant was constructed in 1970. The experts believe that the plant causes threat due to the seismic activity in the region.
