Islamic countries must cooperate in ensuring the safety of pilgrims during the Hajj, Iranian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Mohsen Pak Ayin said at a meeting with the head of the Caucasus Muslims Office, Sheikhulislam Allahshukur Pashazade, the embassy told Trend Oct. 1.

Pashazade visited the Iranian embassy in Azerbaijan Oct. 1. He expressed his condolences to the Iranian people and the country's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in connection with the death of Iranian pilgrims in a stampede in the valley of Mina.

"A terrible tragedy occurred," he said. "We visited the Iranian embassy in Baku. This is the least that we can do to express condolences to the Iranian people."

During the meeting, Pashazade said there have been some shortcomings in organizing the Hajj this year.

He said that Azerbaijani pilgrims also expressed dissatisfaction with weak organizing work, flight delays and other problems.

Over 750 pilgrims died and around 1,000 pilgrims were injured as a result of a stampede in Mina during the hajj on Sept. 25. The number of Iranian pilgrims died in a stampede has reached 464.
