By Maksim Tsurkov - Trend:

Azerigas, a production union of Azerbaijan's state oil company SOCAR, kicked off work Nov. 30 to resume gas supply to Baku township of Nardaran.

"From yesterday, our employees have been visiting houses in the township and signing new contracts for the purchase and sale of gas," Akbar Hajiyev, the Azerigas head, told reporters Dec. 1.

"The gas supply will be resumed if an agreement is reached," he added.

Nardaran's gas supply was stopped in summer this year.

"In previous years we had big problems with residents [in Nardaran] over repayment of their debts for gas consumption. After an appeal from them, we installed new gas counters, but in the winter last year, most of the counters were broken and we had to stop supplying gas there," he said.

Hajiyev added that the Azerigas employees weren't allowed to the township, and there were cases of them being beaten.

"If we get access to the township's territory, the issue of gas supply will be resolved soon," he added.

On Nov. 26 four members of a criminal group, operating under the guise of religion, were killed during a police operation in Nardaran.

Two police officers were also killed in the standoff.

Fourteen members of the criminal group were arrested along with the group's ringleader Tale Baghirov.
