AZERI OMBUDSMAN INITIATES DEFENSE OF PRISONERS’ RIGHTS

Elmira Suleymanova, the Azerbaijani Ombudsman, came out with initiatives on strengthening of a control over defense of prisoners’ rights, implementation of regular monitoring in the prisons, observation of international conventions on prevention of tortures humiliating the human dignity used in regard to inmates, during his appeal to a roundtable on �The role of public in re-treatment of prisoners and control over the execution of punishment’, the Ombudsman’s Institute told Trend.

The roundtable with participation of representatives from state bodies and law-defense organizations focused on ensuring the role of public in the behavior of prisoners, protection of their rights and enlightenment. The Ombudsman underlined the necessity of improving the activities of the Patronage Council, assistance in the resolution of problems of ill-mental people.

The roundtable mulled a mechanism on holding a monitoring in prisons, rehabilitation of prisoners, prospects for cooperation between the state bodies and public organizations.
