Esma Jahangir, the special rapporteur on freedom of religion and conscience of the UN Commission on human rights, meet with Rafig Aliyev, the chairman of the State Committee on Religious Bodies (SCRB). The guest mentioned successes of the Azerbaijani leadership in the preservation of religious tolerance in the country, SCRB told Trend .
According to Jahangir, some times establishment of mutual understanding between state and religious bodies requires several years. Some problems may arise in this sphere in transitional period, but the role of SCRB in ensuring of freedom of conscience
grows.
Aliyev informed the UN representative on the policy, pursued by the leadership of the country in ensuring of freedom of conscience and religion. There is not exceptional religion in Azerbaijan and the state takes exact steps to protect traditional atmosphere of tolerance and strengthen inter-religious dialogue.
During the meeting the sides discussed exchange of information, import of religious literature to the country and registration of religious bodies. The key objective of the visit of Jahangir is to appreciate the situation with freedom of religion and conscience in Azerbaijan, analyze execution of the declaration on liquidation of all religious discrimination phenomena, adopted by the UN General Assembly. The special repporteur will give her recommendations in this regard.
