Azerbaijan to receive assistance from WHO experts in bird flu' struggle

Azerbaijan is to receive assistance from the World Health Organization experts in the bird flu struggle, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Health told Trend. Two WHO experts will remain in the country till the end of this month.

Experts will visit a number of medical institutions in the country, where they will provide assistance in treatment to local staff and give a number of consultations.

According to the Health Ministry, condition of the resident of Dayikend village, Salyan District, Shahmar Aleskerov, remains poor. Samples taken from persons with the bird flu symptoms are due to be sent with WHO assistance to London lab in order to make tests on bird flu virus presence in them, the Ministry said.

A resident of Salyan District, Gunel Gasimova, passed away on March 8. According to the Health Ministry, bird flu virus could be the cause of her death. However, there is no official verification of this fact from the laboratory, the Ministry added.

Besides, WHO representative Maria Chang have stated in the interview to Radio Liberty that blood samples taken from all the diseased and dead people have been dispatched to London and the results would be ready in the course of the next two weeks.
