Investigation Period of Azeri Writer and Editor Prolonged Two Months

According to the resolution of the Nasimi Court of Azerbaijan, the investigation period of the cases of writer Rafig Tagi and Editor-in-Chief of Sanat Newspaper, Samir Sadagatoglu, in which an article was published which insulted Prophet Mohammed, has been prolonged for two months, Trend reports quoting the Court. During the court session chaired by Judge Gulnara Tagizade, it was determined that despite the length of the investigation period, several aspects have not been fully investigated. Therefore, the Court has prolonged the investigation period for two months.

On November 2, 2006, Sanat Newspaper published Tagi's article entitled Europe and Us. As the article is believed to be insulting of the Prophet Mohammed, it led to protest by local Islamic groups. A criminal case was filed against Tagi and Sadagatoglu in accordance with the article 283.1 (insulting national dignity) of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan.
