Nearly 80% of Products in Azerbaijan Contain Gene-Modified Organisms

Severe barriers are in force in European Union countries against the use, production and import of the gene-modified products (GMP), and therefore, nearly 80% of products imported from foreign countries into Azerbaijan are banned in Europe, the Expert of Ecological Standards Monitoring Fund of Azerbaijan, Irada Yakubova, informed Trend.

It is said that ingestion of GMP products can be harmful to the body.

According to Yagubova, in Autumn of 2005, amendments were made in Azerbaijan to the law banning the import of gene-modified hemicarps, but there has not been a legislative limitation for other GMP products.

Yagubova believes that after the recent price increase for fuel as well as the rise in the cost of agricultural products in Azerbaijan, the volume of imported products, containing GMP, will increase.

The only way to fight against the problem is to assist local agricultural producers to grow ecologically uncontaminated products.
