Royal affair at Baftas

(contactmusic.com) - Helen Mirren's latest movie The Queen is one of a number of films leading the nominations for this year's Bafta awards.

In a much-anticipated move, Mirren was nominated as best actress for her role as the monarch in the days following the death of Princess Diana.

The Queen received nods for best film, outstanding British film, direction, original screenplay, editing, make-up and hair.

Babel, The Departed, The Last King of Scotland and Little Miss Sunshine were also nominated for best film.

Casino Royale, the latest Bond film, also triumphed in this morning's announcement.

It too was nominated for outstanding British film as well as adapted screenplay, editing, production design, sound and visual effects.

Daniel Craig, the latest 007, has turned the tables on the critics who doubted his ability to play the suave secret service agent by being nominated for best actor.

Other actors nominated for the same category are Leonardo DiCaprio (The Departed), Richard Griffiths (The History Boys), Peter O'Toole (Venus) and Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland).

Accompanying Mirren in the best actress category are Penelope Cruz (Volver), Judi Dench (Notes On A Scandal), Meryl Streep (The Devil Wears Prada) and Kate Winslet (Little Children).

Who will ultimately triumph will be revealed on February 11th at the Royal House in London.
