Azerbaijan, like the whole Shia Muslim World commemorates the day of Ashura - the climax of the Remembrance of Muharram. This day is well-known because of mourning for the martyrdom of Hussein ibn Ali, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad at the Battle of Karbala in the year 61 AH (AD 680). Trend has been informed in the Caucasian Muslims Department, that special mourning arrangements have been organized and held in all mosques and sacred places.
Many Azerbaijani believers commemorated the Day of Ashura in the Mosques of Taza Pir, Ejder Maschidi, Nardaranm Bibi-Heybat. Mourning ceremonies started from the last night and accompanied with reading prayers from the Holy Koran. Volunteers handing over their blood to those who are suffering from thalassanemia were present in the major mosques of the country.
Recently, Sheikh-ul-Islam Allahshukur Pashazadeh, addressed all Muslims of the country, and called them up to hold the religious mourning calmly, without blood-letting through striking themselves with chains, as well as observe the order in the mosques and sacred places.
