Azerbaijan, Baku / corr. Trend E.Huseynly / The Director of the Institute for Radiation Problems of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan, Adil Garibov, said in his exclusive interview with Trend that the Government of Azerbaijan has been offered a pack of proposals on construction of the Atomic Electric Power Station.
According to him, the proposals have been prepared after appeal of the Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan, Elmar Mammadyarov, to the Institute. The proposals on the construction of the Station reflect the types of the nuclear reactors and recommend that they should be in capacity of 1500 MWt.b the situation with the nuclear energy in the world and the types of the nuclear reactors have been inspected. It is intended that after 25-30 years after the oil and gas reserves exhaust, Azerbaijan will have to transfer to the nuclear energy. "We consider that the Government of Azerbaijan will settle this issue. Because other energy sources such as wind, sun, water in Azerbaijan may ensure maximally 20% of the energy supply of Azerbaijan," he said.
Except oil and gas, there are not other fuel reserves in Azerbaijan. The Government of Azerbaijan already takes first steps. The territory of Navai settlement has been offered as key place for the construction of the Atomic Station. Former Soviet Union was planning to construct Atomic Station in this territory. However, other territories also have been offered. The preliminary researches show that the territory of Navai settlement is an available place.
In addition, Garibov expressed his attitude towards the threats that may be imposed by the Station. "The nuclear reactors produced in the world have bee intended for 9-12 forces. And there is not territory at 12 forces in Azerbaijan, the maximal force is 9. I consider that the seismic issue is not a problem for the Station. As regards to the reactors themselves, all aspects have been taken into consideration in the new kinds of reactors produced presently. Indeed the crash regime of the reactors is improbable," Garibov said.
He stressed that if Azerbaijan begins the construction of the Atomic Electric Power Station this year, the Station will be ready in 2025. Garibov said that the International Atomic Energy Agency has given consent for the construction of the Station in Azerbaijan.
Politician of Azerbaijan, Rasim Musabeyov, said that he does not consider it necessary to constrict Atomic Station in Azerbaijan and thinks that there are enough oil and gas fields for the energy sources. According to him, the nuclear energy will be expensive for Azerbaijan. Taking into consideration that Azerbaijan is a windy and sunny country, there is no necessity to construct Atomic Station. On the other hand, the nuclear technology is risky.
