Former Health Minister’s Attorneys Make a Written Appeal to PACE
Azerbaijan, Baku / Тrend corr K. Zarbaliyeva / Aghaveis Shahverdi, an attorney of the former Health Minister, Ali Insanov, reported on 13 April that the attorneys of the defendant have directed a written appeal to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).
Shahverdi said that the appeal reflects the infringements of Insanov's rights during the detention, investigation and trial. The attorneys consider that maintenance of a 62-year old seriously ill man, who does not represent any threat for society, in an isolation cell during a long period is a real torture. They also stated the violation of the Convention on Protection of Human Rights and Freedom. The applicants requested to take into consideration the contributions made by the former minister in the world medical science.
The trial and the infringements were discussed during the meeting of a human rights activist, Nofel Jafaroghlu, with the US Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Anne Derse. Jafaroghlu reported that the appeal, the letters written by world medical scientists along with other documents had been presented to the ambassador. Derse promised to consider the matter.
