Azerbaijan, Baku/ Trend , corr. E. Huseynli/ Togrul Shahtakhtinskiy, the Secretary of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS), has said today that the election of the Academy's President has been designated for 26 April 2007.
According to the Secretary, the Academy's Congress is expected to take place in April. During the forthcoming meeting, a report prepared by the existing President of the Academy, Makhmoud Karimov, will be heard.
Mr. Shahtakhtinskiy said that the list of candidates would be determined during the forthcoming arrangement, and on 26 April the name of the new President would be announced following a vote.
After the Head of the Academy is elected, Actual and Corresponding Members of the ANAS will become known as well. A total forty-five candidates have been nominated for taking thirteen seats of the Acting Membership of the Academy, and a total of 209 candidates will compete for twenty-nine seats of the Corresponding Membership in the Academy.
Notably, the last election of the President of ANAX was held in 2001. Makhmoud Karimov collected most of the votes then and by the Presidential decree of 2002, Mr. Karimov was appointed President of ANAS. According to the ANAS Charter, Mr. Karimov has the right to re-nominate his presidential candidacy.
