Head of National TV and Radio Council: Azerbaijan Should Refuse to Broadcast Foreign TV Channels

Azerbaijan, Baku / corr. Trend A.Ismaylova / The Chairman of the National TV and Radio Council of Azerbaijan, Nushiravan Maharramly, said on 24 April that Azerbaijan should refuse to broadcast foreign TV channels. He stressed that Azerbaijan has reached a level that presently it needs to eliminate the undesirable changes which occurred in 1990. If before permission was provided to Russian and Turkish TV channels, for this and other reasons, the situation has now changed and these frequencies should belong to Azerbaijan.

In addition, he expressed regret that the transmission of the Russian channels on the territory of Azerbaijan is magnified and there are efforts to link it with the Russian-language community. Maharramly condemns justifying it as anti-Russian policy.

"It is a very serious, complicated and disputable issue. This activity should be regulated by certain bodies. It is inadmissible to create chaos here. In this case, the internet transfers from private to mass mean.Even the law contains articles that the activities of more than three people are considered as entrepreneurship. I do not say the Council should control this sphere, but certain body should exist. We study the practice in the world. For instance, the activities in Internet are not regulated in Estonia and other several countries and why should we interfere in broadcasting via Internet?" Maharramly questioned.
