Azerbaijan, Baku / Тrend corr S. Ilhamgizi / Ali Hasanov, the head of the Social and Political Department of the President's Administration of Azerbaijan, stated on 7 May that it was too early for Azerbaijan to pass a law on Defamation (exemption from liability for calumny and insulting one's honour and dignity). He noted that the law was under discussion.
Hasanov reported that no European country had passed the law.
"We will include the issue in the agenda only if the law is passed in countries where the state of democracy and press is better than in Azerbaijan. Azerbaijani society is not ready for exemption of press and journalists from this liability. I consider the law to be too early for Azerbaijan," Hasanov stressed.
