Water Level Increase of Kur River Causes Emergency Situation in Salyan Region

Azerbaijan, Salyan / Тrend corr E. Mammadov / Overflow of the Araz River, hard rains, and melting of snow have caused rapid increase in water level in the Azerbaijani part of the Kur River.

The water level of the Kur in the Salyan region has risen by 32mm. According to the expert forecasts the level can rise by another 1m.

The Department of Dam Consolidation of the Kur and Araz Rivers has begun consolidation work in the centre of Salyan. An employee of the department, Chingiz Guliyev, reported on 17 May that ten KAMAZ trucks and five excavators, as well as technical and manpower initiatives from the local State Committee on Melioration and Water Supply have been involved.

The last time the river's level rapidly rose, in 2003, it cost AZN 15mln in damages caused to the region.

Salyan region is situated 115km south of Baku.
