Broadcasting of Foreign TV Channels via Local Frequencies Impedes Development of Cable Television in Azerbaijan
Azerbaijan, Baku / Тrend corr S. Ilhamgizi / The broadcasting of foreign channels via local frequencies impedes development of cable television in Azerbaijan, the chairman of the National Television and Radio Broadcasting Council, Nushiravan Maharramli, said on 23 May.
He said that if the obligations on broadcasting of Russian channels in Azerbaijan play an important role in bilateral relationships, they should be mutual.
"The obligations should not be unilateral. Providing an Azerbaijani TV channel is broadcasted in a Russian region thickly populated with Azerbaijanis, in Moscow for instance, one Russian channel will be broadcasted in Azerbaijan. We have to do our best in order to develop cable television in the country and the broadcasting of foreign TV channels via local frequencies impedes the process," the chairman added.
As to the anti-Azerbaijani speech voiced in the Iranian ' Sabah' channel, Maharramly said that the Council did not have the liability to put pressure upon foreign channels. "The Council does watch that TV programs and does not hold monitoring exercises on the Iranian ' Sabah' channel. However, in case of issue is raised we will inform the Iranian Embassy to Azerbaijan of the occasion. If Sabah is popularizing anti-Azerbaijani policy, we have a chance to make an analogue step, but it will negatively affect the relationships between the countries," Maharamli noted.
