Azerbaijani Ombudswoman Denies Torture of Former Health Minister

Azerbaijan, Baku / Тrend corr E. Huseynli / Torture of the former Azerbaijani Health Minister, Ali Insanov, have not been reported, the Ombudswoman Elmira Suleymanova, reported on 30 May.

According to the Ombudswoman, she periodically held meetings with the administration of the Bail Isolation Cell1 in order to be updated of the living conditions of the ex-Minister for Health. Suleymanova noted that the temporary discomfort experienced was due to repair work being done.

Previously, Insanov reported that his cell had been filled with smoke. The ex-minister, who was detained in October 2005 for an attempted coup, was found guilty of corruption in 2007 and sentenced to 11 years imprisonment with seizure of his property.

Presently he is held in the Bail Isolation Cell 1 of the Penitentiary Service of Azerbaijan. He has demanded that he be transferred to the Patient Care Institution of the Penitentiary Service. A medical examination has proved that Insanov has a vertebral hernia.
