Environmental Impact from Gabala Radar Station Under Observation: Azerbaijani Minister

Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr.E.Huseinli, S.Ilhamgizi / Husein Bagirov, the Azerbaijani Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, stated that for the definition of the Gabala Radar Station's (RS) impact on the environment, the State Commission functions, and all processes are being kept under control.

The Minister said that the Commission held intensive monitorings on studying the impact of the Gabala RS on the environment and people.

Adil Garibov, the Director of the Institute on Radiation Problems of the National Science Academy of Azerbaijan stated that presently, the functioning of the Gabala RS could not be determined without the monitoring.

"All the monitorings, held by different departments does not correspond with international standards. The reason is because Russia broadcasts the information which satisfies only them, while Azerbaijan does not have modern equipment and staff. The studying of the impact of the Gabala RS on the environment must be held at the State level. The commission on holding monitoring must be created by the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources and the Minister of Emergency. For this reason new equipment must be acquired. After the monitoring we can say the power of the Gabala RS can be increased or not. The necessary documents in this direction must be developed and submitted to the State," Garibov added.

Prior to this, Azerbaijan and Russia signed a ten-year lease granting the Gabala RS for Russian use.

The Gabala RS was constructed during the Soviet period. After gaining independence, the station came under Azerbaijani ownership.
