Zarbaliyeva / A detained employee of the Azerbaijani Azadlyg newspaper, Sakit Zahidov (Mirza Sakit), sentenced to 3 years of imprisonment for a drug-related crime has applied to the European Court on Human Rights due to infringement of his right for fair court investigation provided by the Article 6 of the European Convention on Human Rights and Freedoms, the attorney of the prisoner, Vugar Khasayev, reported to Trend on 8 June. The attorney noted that a supplementary appeal on the decision of Azerbaijani Supreme Court would not be referred to the Plenum of the Supreme Court.
By the decision of the Azerbaijani Court on Serious Crimes Zahidov was returned guilty in accordance with Article 234.1 (illegal purchase and storage of drugs and psychotropic substances in amount exceeding the personal norm) of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan Republic and was sentenced to 3-year imprisonment. The Courts of Appeal and Supreme Courts upheld the sentence.
