Azerbaijan, Baku / Тrend corr I. Alizadeh / Work intended to enable appeals of Azerbaijani refugees from Armenia to the European Court is in progress, the Azerbaijani representative to the European Court on Human Rights, Chingiz Askarov, reported.

"We ask representatives of civic society to assist us, to provide data on problems of Azerbaijanis displaced from Armenia," Askarov noted.

Some 600 displaced persons initiated lawsuits against Armenia at the European Court so far. The European Court is considering the appeals of persons displaced from the Azerbaijani Lachin region. Later the appeals of other persons will also be considered. "The exact date for beginning of the process has not been fixed yet," Askarov added.

As to the civil lawsuit of Azerbaijan against Armenia, the representative noted that in accordance with the European Convention on Human Rights a member country of the Council of Europe can initiate a lawsuit against another CE country, which has violated human rights, at the European Court.

"The Azerbaijani Government is viewing all possible variants of such a complex issue as the restoration of the rights of refugees and displaced persons," the representative noted.

Speaking on the effect of the Azerbaijani lawsuit against Armenia upon negotiations on a peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, he said, "The decision of the court is of an obligatory nature for every country."
