Azerbaijan, Baku / corr. Trend К.Zarbaliyeva / Several prisoners in Gobustan closed prison stopped their hunger strike.
Rafik Ramazanov, the chief of the Penitentiary service of the Azerbaijani Judicial Ministry, stated that only 29 prisoners are continuing the hunger strike.
Ramazanov noted that the prisoners were under doctor's watch, and they have no health problems. The chief denied that there were soldiers guarding the territory of the prison.
Relatives of the inmates insist that more than 50 prisoners began the hunger strike, whose death penalties were commuted to life imprisonment. The hunger strike was announced on 18 June.
In contrary, the Penitentiary service reported that 38 prisoners began the strike on 20 June.
Among the prisoners who joined the strike some were sentenced to life imprisonment after 2000. They are demanding that their life imprisonment sentences be commuted t0 15 years imprisonment.
The decision by the European Court on Human Rights regarding Alikram Humbatov's appeal stated that the death penalty be changed to life imprisonment corresponding to European Convention.
The prisoners announced a similar hunger strike from 16 to 20 April with similar demands.
