Azerbaijan, Baku /corr. Trend S.Ilhamgizi / Javad Derehti voluntarily refused to be re-elected to the position of Chairman of the Congress of World Azerbaijanis (CWA). During the 9th CWA congress, Gulamrza Tabrizi was elected as Chairman of the CWA. The former Chairman did not put himself forward stating that he wished for the position to be taken on by other worthy people.
"I wanted to give others the opportunity to demonstrate their capacity. I am represented in the CWA Executive Board and the activists requested that I hold the position of the First Deputy Chairman. CWA will continue promoting the national interest of Azerbaijan," Derehti said. He said that the 9th congress was successful.
Derehti stated that he approved Gulamrza Tabrizi as Chairman. "I have known the new chairman for a long time and believe that his activity in the Congress will be successful. One of the reasons for my refusal was to show that this organization is important for us. We are prepared to give up personal ambitions for the sake of the organization," he added.
CWA was established in USA and is aimed at protecting the rights of millions of Azerbaijanis residing in Iran and fighting for the independence of South Azerbaijan.
