BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 13. Azerbaijan is heading in the right direction to increase its gas exports in 2022, and in the following years, via the Southern Gas Corridor (SGC), James Durso, regular commentator on foreign policy and national security matters, said, Trend reports via Eurasia Review analytical journal.

According to the expert, currently, 10 billion cubic meters of Azerbaijani natural gas is transferred to Europe through the SGC, and 6 billion cubic meters - to Turkiye.

“To meet the demand, Azerbaijan will also put two new gas fields in operation, and is open to investment, to expand the capacity of the SGC, for example by installing additional compressor stations that can double the flow of gas,” Durso noted.

The Trans-Caspian International Transport Route, also known as the Middle Corridor, “may finally get a chance to flex”, as transporting through Central Asia and the Caucasus will increase six times in 2022, the expert said.

“Baku can now step in and offer to help supply Europe’s energy needs and wring a multi-decade purchase agreement from the Old Country in order to secure financing to expand the SGC,” Durso said.
